Meatless Monday’s – is it easy to follow?

January 31, 2011 11:02 am

Folks, meatless Monday’s is not a new concept. This notion of reducing our meat intake goes back all the way to world war II. This is when President Woodrow Wilson requested the public to reduce their meat consumption (Meatless Tuesday back then). Why, you ask? Simple, the president wanted to make sure our resources were going to the right place, to our troops overseas. As a result, the public reduced its consumption and we prevailed out of the war. The base concept, if we work as a team, no task is impossible.

Now, fast forward to the present day. Meat operations are very costly, inefficient in many ways and who suffers from this – animals, humans, and our planet. Its a no brainier on how animals suffer during this process so I don’t want to dwell on this. I do want to briefly discuss the effect this has on humans and planets.
Humans, now more than ever, consume the most meat than they did in any generation prior, as a result, there is a direct correlation on the accelerated increase rates of diseases, cancers and death. Oh our planet earth! As much as we all want to take care of our planet (subconsciously), its difficult to put that thought in motion – busy schedules, forgetting, or simply lack of opportunity! Its no secret that our climate is warming faster than ever, we emit waste in the air and the useful life of our planet has decreased ten fold.

What can we do to reverse our damage, simple – lets reduce our meat consumption. Many vegetarian celebrities are on this campaign such as Olivia Wilde, Mario Batali, Simon Cowell and many more.
Now, I did not say STOP eating meat all together. Just reduce, that can mean, skipping the meat on one meal, one day, one year, or whatever you feel comfortable. So here is the game plan, At home, try to look around your kitchen to find vegetarian options and whip them together for a satisfying meal! At the office, ditch Slim Jim’s for a healthy vegetarian snack such as Veggie Sticks or Yogurt. Finally, if your dining out, try out gourmet vegetarian food or you can even review your options on Discover Veggie prior to heading out the door to the restaurant.

On Discover veggie you will find that we have stripped away the meat entrees and list only the veggie items on the menu for your benefit – no temptation and sticking to the game plan.

So, to answer the main question here, is it easy to follow Meatless Monday? We hope we have presented a compelling argument however , with the proper tools, its can be. Happy Meatless Monday!!

I have been on a quest to break down food barriers for vegetarians. Being a life long vegetarian who travels the country (and some parts of the world) without ever feeling hungry. I have been captivated by vast amount of vegetarian food items available, but not yet mainstream. My love for traveling and discovering new vegetarian dishes culminated to co-founding DiscoverVeggie.com in 2011. It is my hopes that I can pave the way for vegetarians to find meatless eats, anywhere!
